However, while we were never able to get our hands on the actual recipe, creating our own copycat version that is quite similar to the original wasn’t too difficult.
These beautiful golden scones are soft and fragrant on the inside, with a subtle crispy coating on the outside.
Best of all, they stay fresh for days, and you can easily reheat them when they start to get a little stale.
Ingredients:

- 4 ½ cups sifted all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup of hot water
- ⅓ cup of sugar
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup of boiling hot milk
- 1 egg lightly beaten
- 1 packet of active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions:
Step 1:
Add very hot water to a bowl, then combine it with a packet of active dry yeast and mix well.
Make sure that the active yeast has completely dissolved in the water.
Step 2:
In a large bowl, combine ¼ cup butter with the salt, sugar, and hot milk. Using a wire whisk or mixer, make sure the mixture is fully combined and the sugar is dissolved.
Let the mixture cool to room temperature.
Step 3:
Once the milk mixture has cooled, it is time to combine it with the yeast that you have previously allowed to activate.
Pour in the lightly beaten egg, and combine with these two mixtures using a whisk or mixer on low speed.
Step 4:
Start adding four cups of all-purpose flour little by little, reserving the remaining ½ cup to dust the surface where you will knead the dough.
Start to knead the dough and incorporate the flour into the mixture until you get a soft but compact dough.
Now, take the dough out of the bowl and place it on the kneading surface, and knead the dough for at least five minutes, or until it’s pliable and soft.
Step 5:
Grease a bowl with melted butter. Next, introduce the dough for the Golden Corral buns into it. Place the bowl with the dough in a warm place, where it should rest and rise for 1 hour and a half.
Step 6:
Dust a pastry cloth with flour, then transfer the dough to it and tap it to release any excess air. Knead the dough for 4-5 more minutes.
If the dough sticks to your hands, you can add a small amount of flour to help knead and shape it.
However, be sure not to add too much flour, as this will affect the texture and softness of the rolls later.
Step 7:
Now is the time to start shaping the Golden Corral buns, which should be between 1 ½ and 1 ¾ inches wide (diameter).
Prepare a pan (13 x 9 x 2 inches) by adding a little melted butter. Next, roll the buns, making sure they don’t stick together.

Coat the top of the buns with a little melted butter or margarine. Bake them at 375 degrees F for about 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
